KYBELLA® is a nonsurgical injectable technique that uses a series of deoxycholic acid injections to target fat cells beneath the chin. The procedure is minimally invasive with little downtime.

    Who is a Candidate?

KYBELLA® is available to adults 18 years or older with moderate to severe fat beneath the chin. The procedure is not recommended for patients who have undergone or are planning to have facial surgery, have trouble swallowing, are pregnant or nursing, or have an infection or medical condition in or near the planned injection site.

KYBELLA® is currently the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for reducing the appearance of a double chin.

    Potential Risks and Side Effects

Side effects of KYBELLA® may include pain, redness, swelling, bruising, and numbness. These side effects typically resolve within one to two weeks. The overall recovery process is very brief, with minimal downtime for most patients.

Serious and rare side effects may include facial muscle weakness, uneven smile, difficulty swallowing, or nerve injury in the jaw. Patients who experience any severe side effects should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

    How to Prepare for KYBELLA®

Patients should take the time to speak to their healthcare provider before the procedure to determine if they are good candidates for KYBELLA®. During an initial consultation, the doctor will review the patient’s medical history and experience with cosmetic procedures on the face, neck, and chin. Patients should disclose any difficulty they may be experiencing with swallowing or bleeding problems.

There is little to no research on how KYBELLA® affects pregnant or breastfeeding women, and so the treatment is not recommended for patients who are nursing, progrant, or planning to become pregnant in the near future.

Because KYBELLA® is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedure, patients won’t need to do much to prepare. A few smart steps to take include washing the face properly before the appointment to reduce the risk of infection, and avoiding NSAIDs to minimize post-treatment bruising.

    How KYBELLA® Works

KYBELLA® injections contain a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a bile acid naturally produced by the body to help absorb fat. The acid in the injection destroys fat cells beneath the chin area to reduce the appearance of a double chin. It’s important to make sure that a trained healthcare professional administers the KYBELLA® injections since deoxycholic acid can kill other cells if not injected properly.

Before the procedure, the patient’s injection sites will be marked and numbed with a topical numbing agent or ice pack to minimize pain or discomfort during the procedure. Patients may receive 20 to 30, and sometimes even 50, injections under the chin. The acid works over the course of a few weeks to gradually kill fat cells.

The number of treatment sessions necessary will vary depending on the patient’s unique condition and expectations. Typically, patients will need multiple treatments to achieve optimal results. Patients may receive up to six KYBELLA® treatments, spaced at least one month apart.
