Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure used to treat skin concerns by stimulating collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling may help reduce the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, and other skin issues. The procedure is also used in certain anti-aging procedures, such as eyelid surgery and sun spot treatment.

This procedure may produce great results for individuals in good health with certain skin concerns that haven’t responded to home treatments or other types of dermatologic procedures, such as peels.

    How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling makes tiny pinpricks in the skin, creating micro injuries that stimulate collagen production and the growth of new collagen-rich tissue. This new skin tissue appears more even in tone and texture.

Over time, the skin loses collagen and its youthful, vibrant appearance. By encouraging the skin to generate new tissue, the collagen naturally makes the skin firmer, too.

    Treatment Areas

Microneedling can be used to treat the following facial skin conditions:

    • Acne scars and other types of scars
    • Age spots (also called “sun spots”)
    • Fine lines and wrinkles
    • Large pores
    • Reduced skin elasticity
    • Uneven skin tone

Microneedling is also sometimes used to treat stretch marks. One study found that microneedling effectively treated stretch marks on the thighs and abdominal area when combined with fillers.

Though microneedling can treat scarring on other body parts, this procedure is primarily used on the face.

    Potential Risks and Side Effects

After professional microneedling, patients may experience bleeding, bruising, infection, and peeling. The procedure is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, suffer from skin diseases, have open wounds, have recently had radiation therapy, and have a history of skin scars.

    Recovery Process

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn’t require any downtime. Patients may resume normal activities after the procedure and makeup may be applied to help hide any visible redness.
