Sculptra® Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable filler used to correct shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles. The filler contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a material that stimulates collagen production, and lasts longer than hyaluronic acid-based fillers. However, the filler is not recommended for use on the lips or eyes.

Sculptra® Aesthetic is the only product on the market that stimulates collagen production within and underneath the skin and fat pads to produce very natural results. The filler is also often used off-label to improve definition and volume in the thighs, biceps, triceps, and pectorals; fill in cellulite dimples, and diminish wrinkles on the chest, elbows, and knees.

    The Benefits of Sculptra® Aesthetic

Unlike other dermal fillers, Sculptra® Aesthetic offers unique benefits:

    • Results last two to three years, compared to six to 18 months for hyaluronic acid-based fillers
    • Stimulates collagen production to deliver best results four to six months after treatment
    • Gradual improvement in appearance means others won’t notice obvious changes
    • Nonsurgical treatment with little downtime

    How Does Sculptra® Aesthetic Work?

The filler contains a biocompatible ingredient that stimulates low-level inflammation in the deeper layers of skin, spurring new collagen production for up to two years. This helps to firm the skin, improve volume, increase skin thickness, and enhance overall skin texture.

The injections are placed into the cheeks, instead of into the nasolabial folds to subtly lift the skin and produce natural results.

Adults aged 18 and over may qualify for the procedure. However, injections are not recommended for patients with coagulation defects.

    What to Expect

The entire procedure typically takes less than one hour. The provider will begin by discussing patient goals, examining the treatment area, marking the injection locations, and cleansing the area with an antiseptic.

Patients may also receive a topical anesthetic before the injections, in addition to lidocaine that may be added to the injection to help minimize discomfort.

After the injections, the provider will massage the area to help distribute the filler and prevent the formation of lumps or nodules under the skin. After treatment, the provider will show patients how to massage the skin themselves — several times a day, for about one week after the procedure.

    Recovery Process

Most patients are able to resume normal activities right after treatment. Patients may see a temporary plumping effect, and additional volume around the injection site that may last for several days before fading.

The medical professional will instruct patients to avoid sun and UV lamp exposure until the swelling and redness has subsided.

    Potential Risks and Side Effects

After treatment, patients may experience the following side effects:

    • Small knots under the skin, due to swelling
    • Bruising
    • Skin discoloration
    • Keloid formation
    • Hypertrophic scarring

Patients may cover any bruising on the face with makeup.
